The fat-dissolving injection: what injection lipolysis can do

Article by Dr. Katja Schindler · Dermatologie

For small, stubborn fat deposits – and explicitly not for weight loss. Procedure, result and limits.

Injection lipolysis has a clearly defined area of use. Within these limits it works well – outside them it inevitably disappoints.

The principle

An active solution is injected directly into the fatty tissue. It dissolves the membrane of the fat cells; the contents are liquefied and removed via the metabolism.

What it is suitable for

What it is not suitable for

The treatment is not a method for weight loss and no substitute for liposuction with larger volumes. With pronounced overweight it does not make sense.

Procedure

After assessing the problem zone, the area is marked and the solution is injected with very fine needles in an even grid. Depending on the area, this takes 20 to 40 minutes.

What is normal afterwards

Swelling, a feeling of pressure, redness and tenderness are explicitly part of the effect – it is a deliberate inflammatory reaction. These signs subside over a few days. Do not schedule the treatment immediately before an important event.

How many sessions

Usually two to four sessions six to eight weeks apart. The final result appears a few weeks after the last treatment.

Lasting – under one condition

Treated fat cells do not come back. With significant weight gain, however, the remaining cells enlarge. So the result lasts with stable weight.
